Fortune Favours the Brave as St Joseph’s Goes Greek

Thanks to a generous Grant from the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies, St Joseph’s was able to fund an Ancient Greek Day for Year 5 last term.

Participating in a series of Greek workshops, Year 5 explored what it was like to be a mortal (and immortal) in Ancient Greece with presentations on medicine, warriors, heroes and a special look at the theatre. The class also made theatre masks and pottery vases.

The whole School was treated to an Ancient Greek themed menu from Caterlink, our School dinner supplier, who ensured that a legendary feast was prepared by a laurel leaf crowned cook and her assistant. Whilst the Olympian Gods may have dined on nectar and ambrosia, the Area Manager for Caterlink had spent time in the school discussing with the children their research on ancient Greek food and had concocted a bespoke menu based on the children’s research.

The school hall was decorated for the event with Greek theatre masks the children had designed as part of their research into the blood thirsty world of Ancient Greek drama. All children were invited to wear Greek inspired outfits to the lunch symposium, although we all discovered that the dismal February weather was a little too cold for chitons and peplos !

Our children benefit significantly from these hands on learning days which appeal to learners who need a more visual and kinaesthetic experience of learning outside traditional classroom models.

We would like to thank the Hellenic Society and Caterlink whose generosity have allowed us to promote a day of learning that will act as a perfect springboard to further classical learning when the children transfer to secondary school and further their studies.
