Nurse McAuley, a theatre Nurse at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, visited Reception class this week to talk about the world of hospitals and how they help when people are ill or injured. Dressed in her working ‘Uniform’ and accompanied by a range of medical equipment, Mrs. McAuley spoke to the children about what it is like to work in a busy hospital.
Exploring the topic of ‘Ourselves’ which is part of the Reception curriculum, the children participated in a hands on plaster cast session with Mrs. McAuley calmly explaining to a rapt audience what happens when you break a bone and what hospitals can do to help. With an eye to the importance of hygiene, the children were encouraged to try on gloves, face masks and hairnets which are essential equipment for any theatre nurse.
The class would like to thank Mrs. McAuley for the time she game them in what was a memorable learning platform – we think she has done much to inspire a future generation of Florence Nightingales!.
