Napoleon may have met his downfall at Waterloo, but for St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Broadstairs, the word is now synonymous with victory when St Joseph’s Girls sprinted to the top of the podium in the Waterloo Cup 2017 held at Upton recently.
Lola, Millie and Natalia beat off stiff opposition from a sizeable field of Thanet competitors to claim victory in the Cup which commemorates the arrival on Viking Bay of a dispatch written by the Duke of Wellington announcing the historic victory on the fields of Waterloo in June 1815.
Extremely hot conditions made the 800m relay races for each year group extremely challenging but the 27 competitors from St Joseph dug in deep to run with stamina and determination.
The senior girls (representing years 5 and 6) won the overall trophy giving a masterclass in running. The other competitors faced their Waterloo as Natalia’s sensational lead was maintained by Millie and then finalised in conclusive style by Lola who lapped other competitors still on the second leg.
Mr Jones would like to thank all the competitors who raced for the School that day and we would like to acknowledge the huge input from Mr Sutton over the last year. Mr Sutton has put running firmly on the school’s sporting agenda with his lunchtime running club for juniors. It has been a privilege to witness his passion for running which has definitely rubbed off on our wonderful athletes !
